THERMOL™ is an eco-friendly multi-functional fuel additive. It is a product of Abhitech Energycon Limited developed at India's prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai.

Working principle of THERMOL™

A natural organo amino technology.

THERMOL™ is a result of R&D efforts at IIT Bombay, in the field of organo amino based compounds, to solve fuel related problems. THERMOL™, when mixed in the liquid fuels, gives the following benefits:

  • Organo amino compounds, the major ingredients of THERMOL™, act as dispersants and homogenize the fuel in the storage tank and prevent sludge formation.
  • Surfactants reduce the surface tension of fuel oil droplet, resulting in improved atomisation. These in turn lead to more complete combustion at low excess air levels. The improved spray pattern leads to better flame geometry.
  • The catalyst induces nascent oxygen from the available air, thereby improving combustion efficiency.
  • Solvents provide non-adherence properties to the flakery carbonaceous deposits, which keeps the system clean.


Sulphur in fuel oil is oxidized in 2 steps.

1. sulphur + oxygen = sulphur dioxide
S+O2=SO2

2. sulphur dioxide + oxygen = sulphur trioxide
2 SO2 + O2 = 2 SO3

With regular usage of THERMOL, the system operates at lower excess air, thereby inhibiting reaction (2) which is not desirable.

Whether it is a refinery or an industry, sludge is the headache to all levels in the orgnaisation. Sludge in the pipe line reduces the effective diameter, sometimes even blocks the lines, thereby inducing operational losses. Furthermore, sludge cannot be disposed due to environmentsal regulations. It also contains energy, which costs. Hence, sludge prevention and sludge recovery are the topics of welcome to the refineries/industries.

When treating sludge, it is important that the chemical composition should not be altered, so the combustion catalyst can be used for the recovered oil too.

THERMOL™ contains dispersants and surfactants along with the solvents. Dispersants helps in dispersing the sludge already present, or formed, as small minute particles. This action reduces the surface tension of oil droplets. Dispersants in THERMOL™ cumulatively help in the sludge recovery.

THERMOL™ breaks the hydrocarbon agglomerations, thereby liquefying the sludge. THERMOL™ possesses maxium sludge recovery (MSR) value. It is tested in laboratory and practical platforms.

THERMOL™ performance enhancer additives can be used with currently available fuels and also with the more and more common bio- and 2nd generation liquid fuels, by applying the following main rules.

Add THERMOL™-P with a ratio of 1:2000 to normal and premium petrols regardless of octane number, to bioethanol and to any kind of mixture of the two.

Add THERMOL™-D with a ratio of 1:2000 to winter and summer diesel fuels, kerosine and to the mixture of these.

Add THERMOL™-D with a ratio of 1:1000 to biodiesel.

Add THERMOL™-Thunder with a ratio of 1:2000 to petrol mixtures (for motorbikes having a two-stroke engine; motor sleighs; chainsaws running on a mixture of poor oil/fuel; portable gensets)

A frequently asked question is if the THERMOL™-products can be substituted with each other. There is also a rule for that. THERMOL™-D, which has been developed for diesel, can be used only with diesel, it cannot be added to any other liquid fuels.

THERMOL™-P and THERMOL™-Thunder may be used with all kinds of fuels as a substitute to realize advantages without any damage to the engine, but we emphasize that they should be used mainly with those types of fuels they were developed for.
